Overview

The first written reference to Minsk, the capital of present Republic of Belarus was founded in 1067 in period of Kievan Rus disintegration. Minsk was one of the independent Principality of Polotsk centers. After Mongol devastation of the Kievan Rus territories Minsk found a protection of its North-Western neighbours and became a part of Grand Duchy of Lithuania (since 1569 a part of the Polish–Lithuanian state Rzeczpospolita). As the result of the 2nd Partition of Rzeczpospolita (1793) Minsk was included into the Russian Empire. Since the early XX c. Minsk together with Vilnius was a center of Belarusian national movement. After the end of Russian Civil War (1918-1920) and Polish-Soviet War (1919-1921) Soviet  power was established on the territory of Belarus and Minsk became a capital of Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic. During WW II Minsk was completely destroyed but soon after the war Minsk was rebuilt and now it is twice as big as before the invasion.
