Overview

We invite you to short tour to Belarus. Historically territory of Belarus was West areas of the Kievan Rus Old Russian state. After feudal disunity and devastation of the Kievan Rus by Mongols (1237-1240) west lands of former Kievan Rus voluntarily united with Lithuanian state and became a kernel of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1569 Grand Duchy of Lithuania united with Poland into a single state Rzeczpospolita under the hegemony of Poland. As the result of three partitions of Rzeczpospolita (1772-1795) Belarus and Lithuania became part of the Russian Empire. After disintegration of the USSR (1991) Belarus became an independent state but still kept very close relations with Russia. Now people of Belarus is trying to find a balance between inevitable Western modernization and keeping of national traditions and spiritual heritage accumulated during the whole centuries-old tragic and heroic history of the country including Lithuanian, Russian and Soviet periods.
