In Soviet period the name of the great thinker and theologian Muhammad Al-Bukhari was consigned to oblivion but after declaration of independence of Uzbekistan (1991) the memory of Imam al-Bukhari was restored. In 1998 the magnificent memorial complex was built in the Hartang kishlak (small traditional winter settlement of semi-nomad Turk peoples of Central Asia). Memorial complex includes entrance building, mausoleum of Imam Al-Bukhari, khanqah (building for gatherings of Sufi brotherhood), library and madrasah grouped around a rectangular (practically square) courtyard. The decoration of the memorial complex is made from typical for the medieval Islamic architecture materials — tiles, majolica, ganch (natural mixture of gyps and small particles of loess) and carved marble.
