Overview

The capital of Latvia, Riga was founded in 1201 when Archbishop Albert came here with the army of Teutonic knights. Soon the city turned into an important commercial center. The Church of St. Peter with an ancient bell-tower on which a guilded rooster perches proudly became the symbol of the city. In the XIV c. the Order Castle was built in Riga which for centuries served as the residence of the city rulers. The Dome Monastery built during several centuries boasts one of best organs in the world.

Itinerary

During 3-hour walking tour you will have a chance to explore the intact medieval architecture of Riga’s Old Town: Riga’s Castle, the Swedish Gates. It is generally recognized that Riga has the finest and the largest collection of art nouveau buildings in the world. There is well-known art nouveau area in Riga but you can see a lot of interesting samples of this architectural style at Old Town too (for example, one of architectural name cards of Riga, famous Cat House).

You will see also the Freedom Monument devoted to all fighters for freedom since legendary character of Latvian heroic epic Lacplesis till Latvian Riflemen of WW I. Monument was built in 1935 and kept in Soviet period thanks to active position of outstanding Russian sculptor Vera Mukhina, native of Riga and author of one of the main symbols of Soviet epoch – Worker and Kolkhoz Women monument in Moscow. After the tour is possibility to visit Riga Dome Cathedral (optional) and Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation (optional).
