St Petersburg

St Petersburg is the second largest and one of the most beautiful and most touristic cities of Russia. The city is situated in the Northern-West part of Russia on the Neva River. Besides the Neva River there are about 100 smaller rivers and channels in St Petersburg, that’s why it is often called Northern Venice. St Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703. It served as the capital of the Russian Empire from 1713 to 1918. There are lots of beautiful buildings and palaces in St Petersburg’s historical center which was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In recent decades St Petersburg became the major tourist capital of Russia. The city has 221 museums, more than 80 theatres, 100 concert organizations, 45 galleries and exhibition halls, 62 cinemas and around 80 other cultural establishments. Every year the city hosts around 100 festivals and various competitions of art and culture, including more than 50 international ones. St Petersburg is considered to be the cultural capital of Russia.

Moscow

Moscow is the capital of Russia, its largest cultural and scientific center. The reference to Moscow is first registered in old manuscripts of 1147. The historical center of the Moscow is considered to be the Kremlin. Here you can see breathtaking architectural ensemble of the XV-XVII cc. surrounded by ancient cathedrals, Bell the Tsar and Cannon the Tsar. On the territory of the Kremlin you can visit the Armoury Museum, one of the oldest museums in Russia. Another iconic Moscow site is the Red Square. Here you can enjoy a unique architectural ensemble including the Cathedral of St. Basil, the monument to Kuzma Minin and Dimitry Pozharsky, the Our Lady of Kazan Cathedral, the History Museum of Russia, the Upper Trading Arcades (GUM), Lenin’s tomb. There are many sites of Soviet heritage in the city such as Stalinist skyscrapers and one of the biggest and the most beautiful underground systems in the world. But Moscow is also a vibrant, modern and very green city with a lot of parks and modern buildings.

Sochi

Sochi is the main sea and ski resort of Russia. It is an agglomeration of separate settlements established in 1830s as coastal forts. The main places of interest of the Central Sochi are the Winter Theatre, the Marine Station, the Primorsky Boulevard promenade, the subtropical Sochi Dendrarium. Settlement of Matsesta is the largest in Russia medical spa complex established in 1902 on base of local springs. From the Romanesque style tower built in 1936 at the Mount Akhun you will see panorama of Sochi city and the Black Sea coast. In February 2014 the Olympic Winter Games were held in Sochi. A lot of sport and infrastructure facilities located in two clusters (coastal — Imereti Lowland and mountain — the Krasnaya Polyana ski resort) were built. Now you can see Olympic stations and facilities.  At the Olympic Park you can see the only in Russia Formula One Gran Prix racing circuit, visit one of the museums or enjoy yourself at the Sochi amusement park.

Kazan

The 1000 years old capital of the Republic of Tatarstan is situated at the most picturesque part of the confluence of the Volga River and the Kazanka River. The city of Kazan is often called a dating place of the East and the West because Islam and Christianity have neighbored for many centuries here. Kazan brands itself as the «Third Capital» of Russia as well. The pearl of the city is the Kazan Kremlin, XVI-XVIII cc. architectural ensemble included to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Its architecture combines features of Russian, Tatar and European culture. The atmosphere of old Kazan has survived in former Tatar Settlement with its narrow streets, wooden houses and carved fences. During city visit you will see functioning St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral (1726), the Marjani Mosque (1771), the Kazan University where many prominent scientists, writers and musicians studied or worked. You will stroll in Bauman Street which is notable for historical structures, various sculptural compositions and fountains made after Tatar legends as well as old street lamps and pavilions.

Kaliningrad

Kaliningrad (Konigsberg) is the capital of the namesake region which is Russian enclave surrounded by the territory of Poland and Lithuania. This region was a part of East Prussia and was given to the USSR after the WW II. The name card of the city is its Cathedral located on the picturesque Kneiphof Island. Grave of the great German scientist and philosopher Immanuel Kant is located just near the Cathedral wall. Very interesting samples of the Modern architecture (early XX c.) are kept at the Amalienau suburban quarter. The favorite place of locals and numerous tourists is the Fischdorf – city area at the Kneiphof Island covered since 2006 with modern buildings in German pre-war style. The city itself represents a mix of German and Soviet architecture. Kaliningrad is famous for its unique fortification built in the middle of the XIX c. (the Kronprinz Barracks, the Grolman Bastion, the Oberteich Bastion, Der Dona Tower, the King’s Gate, the Sackheim Gate). Exposition of the Fort №5 (Friedrich Wilhelm III) Museum is devoted to battle for Konigsberg in April 1945. Other very interesting and original destinations located near Kaliningrad are the Curonian Spit, one of the first Baltic sea resorts – Svetlogorsk (Rauschen), the main base of the Russian Baltic Navy – Baltiysk (Pillau), the largest in the world center of amber extraction — Yantarny (Palmnicken).
