Overview

Sergiev Posad is a lovely provincial town situated 74 km from Moscow. The life of the inhabitants of the town is centred around the Monastery of the Holy Trinity (Troitse Sergieva Lavra), a unique monastic ensemble of Russian Orthodoxy from the 15th to the 19th centuries. It's the most important functioning monastery in Russia and the spiritual center of Russian Orthodox Christianity. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. The Monastery was founded in 1345 by St. Sergius of Radonezh and contains his relics.
