Overview

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania situated on the Neris River. The first written reference to Vilnius was made in 1323 when Lithuanian Prince Gediminas moved his capital from here from Trakai (of-course, city had been built long before). In Vilnius you can see magnificent architectural monuments built in Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical styles kept with great care so today capital of Lithuania is a harmonious combination of elegant style of the past and the present day life.

Itinerary

During the Old Town walking tour you will visit the Cathedral Square, a popular meeting place for the townspeople and one of the main symbols of Lithuania and its tourist attractions. You will see one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe and unique Gothic ensemble — Church of St. Anne and Church of St. Francis and St. Bernard, will pass through the ancient lanes of the Old Town, take a walk on the Jewish Quarter (during the nazi occupation it was a Ghetto area), you will see the oldest stone Christian church in the country — the St. Paraskeva Orthodox Church where Russian emperor Peter I baptized Alexander Pushkin’s great-grandfather Abram Hannibal (African by origin). You will visit the Town Hall Square, one of the oldest squares of the city and proceed to the Holy Gate of the fortress wall where the Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn icon revered by both the Eastern and the Western Christians is kept.
